BOWLING GREEN - Bond was set at $20,000 yesterday for a Wauseon man who is accused of holding his girlfriend at knifepoint inside her dormitory room at Bowling Green State University.

Matthew J. Kinder, 21, who was charged with kidnapping, was being held in the Wood County jail.

BGSU police said they were called to Offenhauer Tower West about 5:30 p.m. Thursday by the father of Brittany Yaichner, who said his daughter had called him saying she was in her room with her boyfriend and he had a knife. When police arrived, the man was gone.

Ms. Yaichner told police that Mr. Kinder held her at knifepoint, refused to let her leave, and smashed her computer monitor.

Mr. Kinder, a student at Ohio State University, was arrested at the request of police after returning to Bowling Green. According to police reports, he told officers he went to his girlfriend's room to retrieve some belongings and became "furious" with her. He denied threatening her with a knife.

BGSU spokesman Teri Sharp said Mr. Kinder and Ms. Yaichner apparently were breaking up after a three-year relationship.

During a video arraignment from the jail yesterday, Bowling Green Municipal Court Judge Mark Reddin ordered Mr. Kinder not to return to BGSU and have no contact with Ms. Yaichner. A bond hearing was set for 11 a.m. Monday, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Nov. 4 in Municipal Court.
