A former co-captain of the University of Toledo football team surrendered to authorities yesterday on an assault charge from a November incident that hospitalized a 23-year-old Maumee man.

Leo Frierson, a defensive end on the 2001 Toledo team that won the Motor City Bowl against the University of Cincinnati, turned himself in after he was indicted Monday by a Lucas County grand jury for felonious assault.

Mr. Frierson of Fostoria was released yesterday on a supervised recognizance bond.

Authorities said Mr. Frierson was one of four people who severely beat Daniel Curtis of Maumee at the BP gas station at Airport Highway and South Holland-Sylvania Road in Springfield Township Nov. 20.

Mr. Curtis was taken to Medical University of Ohio Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for a fractured jaw and other injuries.

Andrew Rose, 25, of 2021 Stengel St., Maumee, and Donovan Dixie, 30, and Anton Dixie, 25, both of 5940 Walnut Circle, also were charged earlier with felonious assault in connection with the beating.

Sheriff's Detective Ron Sarahman said Donovan Dixie approached two women in a car who were with Mr. Curtis.

Detective Sarahman said authorities believe all four men attacked Mr. Curtis when Mr. Curtis asked Donovan Dixie to leave the women alone.
