Arraignment slated for woman in fatal stabbing

1/26/2006

FREMONT A Fremont woman was to be arraigned today in Sandusky County Common Pleas Court on an indictment that charges her with stabbing her father to death and injuring two girls.

Lona Rios, 45, was indicted Tuesday on one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and two counts of felonious assault. The murder charge is a special felony that carries a sentence of 15 years to life in prison. The attempted murder counts are first-degree felonies that carry prison terms of three to 10 years, and the felonious assault charges are second-degree felonies, with prison terms of two to eight years.

Fremont police said a disagreement over whether to watch football or a movie on television caused Ms. Rios to grab a knife the evening of Jan. 14 and fatally stab her father, Hilario Rios, 69, in their near-downtown home on North Front Street. Police said Ms. Rios then turned the knife on her 9-year-old niece and her niece s 8-year-old friend. The girls received stitches for their wounds.
