ALVORDTON, Ohio A house in eastern Williams County was heavily damaged yesterday by a fire that started in the home s kitchen.

Bob Short, assistant chief of the Alvordton-Millcreek Township Fire Department, said crews were called to 18631 County Road O at 9:21 a.m. after a passing motorist saw smoke and flames coming from the two-story frame house.

The house s occupants, Deena Haynes and Tobias Dobson, were not home, but a dog and two cats perished in the blaze. No one was hurt.

More than 30 firefighters from Chief Short s department and from Pioneer, Kunkle-Madison Township, Montpelier, Fayette-Gorham Township, and Waldron-Wright Twp., Michigan, were on the scene for nearly four hours.

Chief Short said the house sustained extensive smoke and fire damage, but a monetary loss had not been determined last night. Fire officials were still studying the cause of the fire but not did believe it had been intentionally set, the assistant chief said.
