2/26/2006

A 27-year-old man was fatally wounded early yesterday outside a North Toledo bar, and a 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the shooting death, police said.

Hiram J. Beasley of 503 Clark St. was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Micah Holmes of 525 Everett St. went to the Safety Building with his attorney later in the day and, after questioning, was arrested at 6:45 p.m. and charged with voluntary manslaughter.

He was being held in the Lucas County jail pending arraignment in Toledo Municipal Court.

Police were called to 3304 Beaumont Drive in North Toledo just after 2 a.m. to check on the safety of a person on the porch.

When officers arrived, they found Mr. Beasley with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Mr. Beasley was in a large group of disorderly people that had left the Knight Cap Inn, 3302 Buckeye St., shortly before police were sent to the Beaumont address. There was an altercation and Mr. Beasley was shot, police said.

Gail Beasley, Mr. Beasley's mother, said he is survived by an 8-year-old daughter.

Mrs. Beasley said her son, who attended Rogers High School, was self-employed.

The owner of the bar could not be reached for comment yesterday.
