City man faces charge in assault with shovel

A central Toledo man was arrested yesterday for allegedly hitting another man in the head with a shovel last month, causing the victim to have some brain damage and to lose sight in one eye.

Isaiah Shaffer, 33, of 1265 Blum St., was being held in the Lucas County jail on one count of felonious assault pending arraignment today in Toledo Municipal Court, authorities said.

Police said he struck Jerome Sutton, 51, during an incident April 1 at 1353 Winnette Drive. The victim received more than 300 stitches and 300 staples to his head from the injury.

He was treated at the Medical University of Ohio Medical Center.
