Apartment fire blamed on child with a lighter

7/7/2006

Firefighters yesterday battled a blaze at a three-story apartment building at 922 North Huron St. that caused about $20,000 damage, officials said.

The fire apparently was started about 12:30 p.m. by a child playing with a lighter, fire Investigator Andre Tiggs said.

The occupant, Angelique Black, 21, was in a back room when she saw smoke in her children's bedroom, and then saw curtains on the side of the bed on fire. She escaped with her sons, ages 4 years and 4 days old, and a 3-year-old boy she was baby-sitting. The fire was confined to her apartment. The building, which houses six apartments, was evacuated, Investigator Tiggs said.

The Greater Toledo Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
