Monroe County deputies continue search for arm

7/8/2006

MONROE - Monroe County sheriff's deputies yesterday continued their search for the arm of a Romulus, Mich., woman that was severed last week after an argument with her husband.

Brenda Humphrey, 34, was in fair condition yesterday in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ypsilanti.

Her husband, Stephen Humphrey, 39, was being held in the county jail in lieu of $100,000 bond after his arraignment Thursday in 1st District Court. He is charged with operating while intoxicated, causing serious injury, and driving with a suspended license.

The incident occurred last Saturday after the Humphreys left a bar in Milan, Mich. Mrs. Humphrey said she and her husband argued and he told her to get out of their pickup. When she reached back in to get her cell phone, he accelerated, dragging her and then running her over. At that point, her arm was severed, deputies said.

One problem hindering the search is that investigators aren't sure where the accident occurred. "The victim was obviously incoherent with injuries she sustained, and the suspect is not being cooperative," said Deputy Tim George.
