11 Toledo police officers, civilian criminalist to be promoted today

Eleven Toledo police officers and a civilian in the forensic crime lab will be promoted today, raising the number of deputy chiefs on the force to five.

Those promoted will receive their new assignments after the ceremony, set for 10:30 a.m. in the Lucas County commissioners' chambers on the first floor of Government Center downtown.

Those to be promoted are:

●Capt. Michael D. Murphy to deputy chief. He was appointed in 1976 and promoted to captain in 1990. He's worked in field operations, communications, community affairs, personnel and public affairs, and internal affairs.

●Lt. James O'Bryant to captain. He joined the force in 1985 and was promoted to lieutenant nine years later. He's been assigned to field operations, investigations, planning and inspections, community services, and training.

●Sgt. Cheryl Hunt to lieutenant. She began as a civilian records clerk in 1988 and became an officer five years later. She was promoted in 1997 and has worked in field operations, communications, and investigations.

●Sgt. Mark King to lieutenant. He was appointed in 1985 and promoted to sergeant in 1993. He's been assigned to field operations, internal affairs, and as an administrative sergeant.

●Sgt. George Kral to lieutenant. He joined the force in 1990 and was promoted five years later. He has worked in field operations, crime analysis, internal affairs, investigations, and as an administrative sergeant.

●Sgt. Daniel Gerken to lieutenant. He was appointed in 1993 and promoted in 2001. He's been assigned to field operations and special enforcement.

●Sgt. Brian Twining to lieutenant. He joined the force in 1994 and was promoted in 2001. He's worked in investigations, field operations, and communications.

●Officer Norman Giesige to sergeant. He was appointed in 1995 and has worked in field operations, communications, directed patrol.

●Officer Sean Jones to sergeant. He joined the force in 1995 and has been assigned to field operations and special enforcement.

●Officer Wayne Phillips to sergeant. He was appointed in 2000 and has been assigned to field operations and the mountain bike unit.

●Officer Thomas Morelli to sergeant. He joined the department in 1993 and has been assigned to field operations and the mountain bike unit.

●Senior criminalist David Cogan to crime lab administrator. He has been with the department for 12 years.
