7/28/2006

A North Toledo man was shot twice in the leg during a gang-related incident yesterday in which shots were fired at north end residences.

Justin Hunt, 18, of 626 Mulberry St., was in fair condition in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where he was taken after the shooting about 12:05 a.m.

Police were sent to Greenbelt Place apartments on a weapons/person shot call. They found the wounded teenager at 722 Cherry St. He told police he was sitting on the steps in front of 803 Walnut St. with a large group when he heard gunshots, then felt pain in his leg. He ran to the Cherry address and called 911.

The teenager said he didn't see who was shooting.

Witnesses told police a 25-year-old man was present and fired a handgun while involved in an altercation. A witness said the man was in the 700 block of North Michigan Street brandishing a handgun and ordering people to clear the street.

A short time later, a car pulled up and several males got out and began shooting into the Greenbelt Place parking lot area toward the Walnut address. Bullet holes were found in the door and siding at the Walnut address.

A witness said the incident began with two vehicles shooting at a house in the 800 block of North Ontario, later found to be 823 North Ontario. Police said three females and a child were inside the house.

The vehicles continued to the 700 block of North Michigan, where six males, reportedly Blood gang members, got out and began shooting into the Greenbelt Place complex. Later, a witness found the windows of her vehicle broken, police said.
