The police chief of Holland for the past 17 years killed himself last night near Sidney, Ohio.

Chief Doug Kaiser, 45, shot himself in the head with a handgun after being pursued in a vehicle by Sidney police officers and Shelby County sheriff s deputies.

He was police chief of the small western Lucas County village since 1989.

Holland Mayor Mike Yunker declined to discuss the circumstances of the chief s death.

Chief Kaiser was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be scheduled with the Montgomery County Coroner s Office.

Chief Kaiser was first hired part-time for the police department in 1982 while still working full-time for the village street department. He became a full-time police officer and was promoted to chief four years later. The department has eight full-time officers, including the chief.

Mayor Yunker named Sgt. Bob Reed as acting chief.
