10/3/2006

MONROE - Two men were arraigned yesterday afternoon in Monroe County 1st District Court for the early morning armed robbery of a gas station.

Mathew Gonzalez, 34, from Port Huron held up the Sunoco gas station at 1422 North Monroe St. with a knife at around 12 a.m. yesterday, according to Monroe County sheriff's Detective Dave Davison.

Mr. Gonzalez, a paramedic with the Detroit Fire Department, forced a Sunoco attendant to turn over an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, according to deputies.

Monroe resident Terrance Richards, 20, remained in the 1998 Oldsmobile getaway vehicle during the robbery, deputies said.

Deputies pulled over the suspects, who were fleeing the scene in that vehicle, at the intersection of Hurd and Vivian roads in Frenchtown Township. Deputies said they found cash from the Sunoco gas station in the vehicle.

Both suspects' preliminary hearings are set for Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. in front of Judge Jack Vitale.

Mr. Gonzalez is in Monroe County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond, and Mr. Richards is in the county jail in lieu of a $20,000 bond.
