Man identified in North Toledo police shooting

11/9/2006

Police have identified a man who was shot by a Toledo police officer late last night after crews responded to a call of a domestic disturbance.

Charles Johnson, 26, whose last known address was his parents address on Alexis Road, was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center after being shot twice, police said.

Officers responded to a call at home, 727 N. Michigan Ave., shortly before 11 p.m., and Mr. Johnson answered the door, holding a handgun at his side, police said.

Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but he instead pointed it at them. Officer Michael Murphy fired twice, striking Mr. Johnson, according to a news release.

St. Vincent said they had no information on a Charles Johnson, but police said he was in critical condition.

Toledo Police Chief Mike Navarre said Mr. Johnson had said several times yesterday that he was planning to take his own life, and police found a note in the apartment indicating suicide.
