Police checkpoint results in 26 charges

Two motorists were charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired and 24 other charges also were filed against motorists during a five-hour sobriety checkpoint Saturday night and early yesterday on Woodville Road, Northwood police said yesterday.

Sixteen of the citations were for seat-belt violations, while four motorists were cited for operating without a license and two were arrested for drug possession, one of whom was cited as well for possession of drug paraphernalia. One of the alleged seat-belt violators also was charged with operating with expired plates.

During the checkpoint s operation, 424 vehicles passed through, of which 49 were diverted for more investigation and 24 resulted in arrests or tickets. Seventeen drivers were given verbal warnings for failure to carry their driver s licenses.
