A Toledo man who is accused of hitting a police officer with his car and then leading police on a vehicle pursuit was indicted yesterday by a Lucas County grand jury.

Roberto Alvarado, 25, of 222 East Oakland St., was indicted for failure to comply with a police officer and assault, both felonies.

Alvarado, who previously served 11 months in jail for violating probation on a felony drug charge, was arrested Nov. 3 by Toledo police, who were called to the 2000 block of North Erie St. on a report of a man threatening residents. When officers arrived, they were confronted by two cars speeding toward them.

Officer William White blocked passage of one of the cars, driven by a woman, when he stood before it with his gun drawn. The officer then ran to the front of the car driven by Alvarado and ordered him to stop. Instead, he allegedly drove forward and hit the officer in the leg, causing him to land on the car's hood.

Police chased the suspect for several blocks until he stopped in an alley in the 3100 block of Erie and ran. Officers found him hiding in a backyard.
