Prison guard on leave for alleged use of force

12/28/2006

A Toledo Correctional Institution corrections officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation for alleged use of force against an inmate.

John W. Robinson, 35, was placed on leave Dec. 5 for an alleged incident that occurred days earlier, said JoEllen Lyons, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokesman.

She declined comment on specifics of the incident, including how it came to the department s attention and whether the 24-year-old inmate was hurt or treated. No administrative charges have been filed, and Ms. Lyons said she is unaware of a criminal investigation.

Ms. Lyons declined to identify the inmate because of the pending investigation, but she said he is serving a five-year sentence with a three-year gun specification for felonious assault and discharging a firearm near a school. She said he is not from Lucas County and remains in the prison.

Mr. Robinson began working at the Toledo prison as a new hire July 31, 2000, and has no prior discipline or allegations of this nature, Ms. Lyons said.
