3 people robbed; 4 are arrested

Three people were robbed in two separate, but possibly related crimes, early yesterday in South Toledo.

After the second holdup, police stopped a car matching the description of the one used in the first robbery and arrested four people after police found a loaded gun in the car.

On the way downtown, a police car transporting three of the four people was hit by another vehicle, Toledo police said.

George Mays was walking on the sidewalk along Airport Highway near Apple Avenue when a car with at least four people pulled up next to him about 12:15 a.m.

Two men got out of the back seat, grabbed him from behind, and put a pistol to his neck, police said.

The three walked around the corner. One suspect patted down Mr. Mays' pockets as the other held a shotgun to his head. One of them hit him in the forehead with the shotgun before the pair fled in the car without anything.

About 15 minutes later, two men - one with a pistol - robbed Mike Jaber and his girlfriend, Heather Hafer, at a car wash at South Avenue and Federman Street, police said.

One suspect put the gun to Mr. Jaber's face and demanded money. The robber received about $60, demanded more money, and started to hit the victim with the gun. His accomplice took Ms. Hafer's purse, then hit Mr. Jaber in the back of the head. The suspects then fled on foot, police said.

About 2 a.m., police stopped a car at Airport and Thad Street that matched the description of the car used in the first holdup and found a loaded gun under the driver's seat. Kerry Johnson, 22, of South Toledo was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and three juveniles were arrested for curfew violations.

The juveniles were being taken downtown in a police car when the vehicle was hit by another vehicle at Erie and Monroe streets. The juveniles were taken by ambulance to two hospitals for treatment, police said. No other information about the accident was immediately available.
