Man who shot Sylvania Township woman and killed self had court date
1/17/2007The Perrysburg man who shot a Sylvania Township woman twice before shooting and killing himself on Sunday was to appear in Perrysburg Municipal Court tomorrow for a deferred findings hearing for a charge from a separate incident, authorities said.
Jason Stegman, 23, who shot Ashley Eddy outside her home at 2950 Gradwohl Rd. early Sunday, was charged in March with domestic violence and criminal damage. Perrysburg Municipal Court Bailiff Doug Spencer said Stegman was accused of choking his sister, Nicole Stegman, by putting her in a headlock and of repeatedly kicking Ms. Eddy's car on March 25.
Mr. Spencer said the criminal damage charge was dismissed and the domestic violence charge was reduced to disorderly conduct with persistence.
Stegman pleaded no contest and was found guilty of disorderly conduct, with the agreement that the charge would be dropped if the defendant fulfilled terms dictated by the court. According to Mr. Spencer, Stegman had to enter and complete an anger-management program and pay Ms. Eddy $200 in restitution for the damage done to her car.
Stegman was to appear in court at 2 p.m. tomorrow to prove whether he had completed the terms established by the court. Court records show that Stegman paid the restitution in full on April 17.
"It is my understanding that Mr. Stegman completed all of the requirements of the Perrysburg Municipal Court," said Stegman's attorney, Gary Bakies.
After shooting Ms. Eddy, he returned to his home at 113 Twinbrook Drive and shot himself once in the head with a 25-caliber handgun.
He died Sunday night in University Medical Center.
An autopsy conducted yesterday determined Stegman died of a close-range gunshot wound in his right temple, said Dr. Diane Barnett, a Lucas County deputy coroner. His death was ruled a suicide.
Ms. Eddy was taken to Toledo Hospital Sunday and reported to be in stable condition on Monday, authorities said. Hospital officials said they don't have a patient by that name.
