ADRIAN Lenawee County s Madison Township has a new, five-year police levy up for a vote today that would bring in an additional $196,000 annually to the department.
Police Chief Gerald Haensler said the money would be used to add at least two full-time officers, which would allow the department to operate 20 to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Chief Haensler said there has never been a police millage. His department receives $176,000 a year from the township s general operating fund. The police department has two full-time officers who work 16 hours a day, five days a week.
The chief said extra officers are need because the township s business district has expanded in the last few years, increasing call volume.
The 1-mill levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $100 a year. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the township hall, 4008 South Adrian Hwy.
