2 men rob South Toledo convenience store
4/1/2007Toledo police yesterday were investigating the early morning robbery of a South Toledo convenience store.
Police said two men approached an employee opening the Friendship Food Store, 1965 Byrne Rd., about 5 a.m.
The assailants, both carrying handguns, ordered him to deactivate the alarm and open the safe.
Forcing him to the ground, the two men then removed an undisclosed amount of cash and fled.
No one was injured.
Railroad crossing delays on a main route to Owens Community College soon will be history, but for the next six months or so, construction of a new overpass on Oregon Road likely will cause traffic congestion.
Starting Monday, Oregon will be reduced to one lane in each direction near the CSX Transportation crossing north of the Owens campus, where the overpass has been under construction since last year.
The overpass is scheduled to open in October.
Owens officials urged motorists headed to campus to allow extra time or consider using alternate routes, such as the Buck Road/Third Street approach instead of Oregon.
The Toledo Police Department sold 104 items at its vehicle auction yesterday, raising $111,950.
The public auction was held at the police impound lot, 198 Dura Ave., and drew 453 registered bidders, Officer Kathy Trautman said.
The sale of abandoned vehicles brought in $103,600, which after expenses, will go to the city's general operating fund.
The sale of six forfeited vehicles and a speaker system brought in $8,350 for the police department's law enforcement trust fund.
The highest-selling vehicle was a 2006 Ford Fusion that went for $7,300, and the biggest bargain was a Yamaha ATV that sold for $225, Officer Trautman said.
In addition to the usual cars, pickup trucks, and vans, yesterday's sale also included an air compressor, go-carts, boats, and a motorhome: a 1977 Dodge model that went for $700, Officer Trautman said.
The next auction is being planned for sometime in May, the officer said.
BRITTON, Mich. - A Britton man remained in critical condition last night in a Toledo hospital after his minivan was hit by a train Friday morning on Centennial Road at Exelby Highway in Lenawee County's Ridgeway Township, the county sheriff's office said.
Russell Spalding, 83, was flown to Toledo Hospital after the crash that occurred just before 9 a.m. Friday, deputies said.
According to the report, Mr. Spalding was eastbound on Centennial and stopped for the stop sign at the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks, but then continued onto the crossing.
The minivan's rear passenger side was hit by a Canadian Pacific train that was headed northeast on the tracks, deputies said.
There is a stop sign and crossbucks at the railroad crossing, but no lights or gates, deputies said.
On Feb. 1, 2006, a train struck a grain truck at the same crossing, causing minor injuries.
A Texas man remained in the Wood County jail last night in lieu of $100,000 bond for transporting about 45 pounds of marijuana through Perrysburg Township, police said.
Jeremy Brown, 25, of Killeen, Texas, was arrested for drug possession about 8:15 p.m. Thursday.
He was arraigned Friday in Perrysburg Municipal Court and is to appear in court again Thursday.
Perrysburg Township police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on northbound I-75 south of Buck Road and recognized an odor of marijuana, police said.
A police canine unit was called to the scene and alerted to compartments in the vehicle where five bundles of marijuana, with an estimated street value of more than $100,000, were hidden, according to police.
