Threat prompts DeVeaux security crackdown; 6 students arrested

4/28/2007

Six DeVeaux Junior High School students were arrested yesterday, two on weapons charges, one day after a threatening note was found in a school restroom.

Because of the note, which was found at the end of the day Thursday and included "an implied threat to the building" to take place yesterday, school security officials set up a metal detector for students to walk through from

7:20 to 8:45 a.m., Principal James E. Gault said in a letter sent to DeVeaux parents.

Bill Weyandt, security officer of the Toledo Public Schools, said one boy was found with a pellet pistol; another with a pocketknife.

The items were confiscated, and the students were charged with having weapons on school grounds.

Unrelated to the search, two boys who got in a fight were charged with violating the safe schools ordinance, and two other boys were charged with being disorderly, Mr. Weyandt said.
