Police pick up 10 pit bulls in dog roundup

6/8/2007

Ten pit bulls were picked up yesterday during the season's first vicious-dog roundup by the Toledo Police Gang Task Force and the Lucas County Dog Warden's office.

The number of pit bulls picked up yesterday was not unusual; dog warden Tom Skeldon said his office picked up about 500 pit bulls during the first five months of this year. But yesterday was the first time this year police and the warden's office worked into the evening on a roundup of dogs found running at large, improperly confined, walked without a muzzle, lacking a license, or violating other laws.

Charges are expected against owners who claim the dogs, Mr. Skeldon said. Dogs that are not claimed are expected to be euthanized.

In recent summers, Mr. Skeldon said his office and police have conducted two to six such roundups.
