MONROE - A man wanted for allegedly stabbing his former girlfriend's male visitor and then stealing and crashing her vehicle Saturday night was apprehended yesterday in an abandoned van in which he was hiding in southeastern Michigan's Washtenaw County, authorities said.

Dale Richard Martin, 41, of the Milan, Mich., area was in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ypsilanti, Mich., last night under police guard.

He was being treated for a broken vertebra in the middle of his back, which he suffered in the rollover of his former girlfriend's vehicle in northwestern Monroe County, Monroe County sheriff's Sgt. Geoffrey Kovenich said.

Mr. Martin, who is charged with attempted murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, home invasion, armed robbery, and car theft, is expected to be hospitalized for several days before he is taken to the Monroe County jail. He will be arraigned in the county's 1st District Court, Sergeant Kovenich said.

Mr. Martin was taken into custody without incident at 12:15 p.m. yesterday after investigators were tipped off to his hiding place.

Mr. Martin is accused of stabbing Ken Byard, 35, of Levering, Mich., who initially was in critical condition in the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor. No information was available yesterday regarding his condition.

Monroe County authorities said the stabbing happened about 10:30 p.m. Saturday at a home in the 15000 block of Church Street in Azalia, just north of Dundee.

Mr. Martin, they said, broke into the home and stabbed Mr. Byard numerous times after the victim confronted him.
