Kroger evacuated because of smoke

6/27/2007

Smoke from a cooler fire of a yet unknown origin forced the evacuation of employees at the Kroger store on Glendale Avenue near South Detroit Avenue in South Toledo for about an hour yesterday, authorities said.

Fire crews arrived at the store, 2555 Glendale, about 3:30 a.m. and found fire in one of the coolers, fire Lt. Melvin Bond said.

The store was closed to customers at the time.

The employees were allowed back into the store about 4:40 a.m. after the fire was extinguished, Lieutenant Bond said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimate was available last night.
