ELMORE, Ohio Houses in the vicinity of the 3300 block of South Dischinger Road were evacuated yesterday afternoon after a 60 millimeter mortar was found along the bank of Sugar Creek just west of the Dischinger Road bridge.

The Northwest Ohio Bomb Squad from Toledo later destroyed the mortar without incident, the Ottawa County sheriff s office said.

The mortar was found about 3:20 p.m. by Paul Blausey of 3334 Dischinger Road, who minutes later called the sheriff s office and reported finding while walking on his property what he described as a World War II bomb, sheriff s deputies said.

The Northwest Ohio Bomb Squad arrived from Toledo a short time later, inspected the object, and found it to be a 60 millimeter mortar, with something leaking from the inside and the detonating pin exposed.

It was unclear how the mortar ended up at the property. The incident remains under investigation, sheriff s deputies said.
