Maumee man to be arraigned in South Toledo slaying

A Maumee man will be arraigned for murder in the slaying of a woman Saturday night.

Lawrence Jameson, 46, of 2423 South Holland-Sylvania Rd., was arrested after a four-hour standoff with police while holding Tammy Macrae, 47, hostage in his home at the Oak Hill Apartments in South Toledo.

Ms. Macrae was found dead from a gunshot wound when police entered the apartment.

Mr. Jameson claimed to have rigged explosives to a door while holding Ms. Macrae hostage.

He finally walked out of apartment 269 in the complex between Perrysburg-Holland and Garden roads about 9:15 p.m. and was taken into custody.

Moments later, authorities found the woman shot to death inside the apartment.

The incident began about 5 p.m. on a report of a boyfriend-girlfriend domestic disorder, police said.

The woman told a 911 operator that she was being held against her will in the apartment.

Mr. Jameson, who works as an engineer for Norfolk Southern, apparently became upset when the woman said she was leaving him, police said.

Toledo police Captain Ray Carroll said the door to the apartment was ajar when police arrived, but the suspect pulled the door shut and would not let them inside. Police immediately tried to negotiate their way inside but the suspect told them he had bombs in the apartment.

Police tried to call the woman s cell phone numerous times throughout the night. Most of their calls were unanswered.

A police negotiator attempted for hours to quell the situation via telephone. During the incident, Mr. Jameson became "very agitated" whenever the negotiator asked about his hostage.

It was not clear yesterday at what time the woman was killed.

About 8:30 p.m., police said the man was talking about the possibility of committing suicide.

Residents of adjoining apartments were evacuated and police posted snipers on a carport and a grassy area.

Dean Fawaz, who lives in a third-floor apartment, said the couple had a troubled on and off relationship.

He said police were called to the apartment complex again yesterday morning when several family members of the victim were spotted vandalizing Mr. Jameson s vehicle.

Captain Carroll said domestic violence charges were filed against the suspect in October, 2005 but later dismissed.
