Toledoan hit with Taser 5 times, then arrested Treen

Toledo police shocked a south-end man with a Taser Tuesday as they tried to subdue him after a brief car chase in his neighborhood, authorities said.

Steven W. Treen, 48, of 4063 Hermosa Ave. was arrested upon his release from a local hospital and charged with fleeing and eluding a police officer, police said.

Mr. Treen, who was arraigned yesterday in Toledo Municipal Court, was being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond pending a second appearance in court tomorrow, a Lucas County sheriff's deputy at the jail said.

He also was arraigned yesterday in Maumee Municipal Court on a misdemeanor charge of petty theft, according to the booking documents.

A Toledo police officer spotted a car allegedly being operated recklessly about 4 p.m. Tuesday on Dunderry Lane. As the officer turned around and activated his emergency lights, the car drove off at a high rate of speed down Dunderry and on to Redondo Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue before stopping in front of a house, police said.

The driver fled the car, ran through the yard, and jumped a fence. In the process, his shoe got caught on the fence, causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground, police said.

As the officer tried to apprehend the suspect, he fled again. When the officer finally caught up with him, the man began fighting and was shocked five times with a Taser before being subdued. The officer then handcuffed the man and took him to the hospital, police said.
