Police: Toledo man kicks patrol car window, then officer

11/2/2007

A central-city man who authorities said kicked out a window of a Toledo police car and then kicked an officer was arraigned yesterday in Toledo Municipal Court.

Teron Harris, Jr., 18, of 2263 Mayville Place was charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and vandalism. He was being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

Police responded to the 2200 block of Mayville about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday on a report of shots fired. A woman called 911 and told police the suspect was on her porch with a shotgun. He was kicking her door and yelling, a report said.

The woman and three family members heard two gunshots as they ran into their basement, police said.

Officers arrived a short time later and searched Mr. Harris for weapons. When officers tried to handcuff him, he allegedly pulled away and began to wrestle with them. Officers forced him to the ground and then put him in the patrol vehicle, police said. Mr. Harris kicked out the car's back passenger window, bending the frame, police said.

Officer Jim Bruzda opened the door and the suspect kicked him, knocking him backward, the police report said.

Mr. Harris' mother arrived and gave police permission to search her house for a weapon. They found a 22-caliber pistol in a bedroom closet, which they confiscated, police said.
