A family was left homeless early Friday when a fire of suspicious origin damaged their house at 1015 Alden Ct. near Broadway in the Old South End, authorities said.

No-one was home when fire crews arrived about 2:45 a.m. and saw flames coming from the two-story, wood frame house.

The crews had the fire under control in about 20 minutes, by which time the fire, which started in the basement, had spread to the upper floors, Battalion Fire Chief Christine Davis said.

Damage from the fire was estimated at $12,000, Chief Davis said.

The Lucas County Auditor s Web site lists the owner of the house as Robert Lawhorn.
