A man suffered smoke inhalation yesterday during a fire at a house in the 400 block of Victoria Place in Toledo's Old West End, authorities said.

John W. Green, whose age was not available, of 423 Victoria Pl., was treated at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Firefighters dispatched to the three-story structure about 6:10 a.m. found flames on the first floor and smoke throughout the house. They used a ground ladder to rescue Mr. Green from the second floor, The fire then spread from the first-floor kitchen, where it started, to the second and the third floors, Assistant Fire Chief Luis Santiago said.

Within about 10 minutes, firefighters had most of the blaze extinguished. A short time later, they removed two propane tanks from the first floor. The tanks, which were charred and were leaking propane, were taken to a safe location and cooled. The house had no electric or gas service, Chief Santiago said.

A damage estimate was not available. The cause of the fire was under investigation, the chief said.
