NAPOLEON, Ohio A Malinta, Ohio, man was hurt when he jumped off a bridge into the Maumee River late Sunday after he was approached by police who accused him of shouting profanities, authorities said.

The man, 37, was taken to Henry County Hospital. Napoleon police refused to release his name, citing patient privacy laws. His injuries were not life threatening, they said.

Officers arrived at the Maumee River Bridge in Napoleon about 9 p.m. found the man there, and warned him of disorderly conduct, police said.

A short time later, the man was leaving the scene when he entered the eastern sidewalk of the bridge, climbed on a light post and stood up atop its concrete base.

A dialogue between the man and police officers ensued. The man then jumped into the river and spent between 10 and 15 minutes in the water before Napoleon police officers and firefighters pulled him out to safety.

An Ohio Highway Patrol trooper assisted at the scene, police said.
