A single-family central Toledo home was destroyed by fire Friday night, firefighters said.

The house, at 1833 North Detroit Ave., needed to be razed after the blaze that started at about 11:20 p.m. said battalion fire chief Dave Fought.

When firefighters arrived, the second floor was fully engulfed in flames. Crews were pulled out of the home during the fire when it became too hazardous to continue fighting the blaze from inside.

The occupants of the house were not home at the time of the fire. The American Red Cross assisted the family early Saturday morning with lodging.

The loss was estimated at $50,000.
