South Ave. shooting leaves 2 men injured in South Toledo

5/13/2008

Two men were shot yesterday as they approached a South Toledo house where police found weapons and a significant amount of cash, authorities said.

Willie Bailey, 56, of the 2700 block of Winsted Drive, was shot on the left side of his face. He was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly Medical College of Ohio Hospital.

The other victim, Daryll Alexander, 26, of the 600 block of Avondale Avenue, was shot in the arm and taken to Toledo Hospital.

Police said the victims' injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Officials at both hospitals reported having no information on patients by those names.

Mr. Bailey went to check on his son's house at 2336 South Ave. with Alexander about 1 a.m. because his son had been arrested a few days earlier, police said. As Mr. Bailey and Alexander approached the house, two to three suspects came out and shot them, police said.

Toledo police Officer Todd Babcock was checking on reports of suspects breaking into cars in the area of Airport Highway and Kenmore Avenue when he heard gunshots.

Officer Babcock continued to hear shots as he drove toward South, police said.

He got out of his patrol vehicle and began to walk toward the house when a person came out from between two houses, then quickly retreated, police said.

Mr. Bailey and Alexander then appeared from between the houses and told police they had been shot.

Alexander, who had a gun, said he had a concealed-carry permit and surrendered his weapon to police, a report said.

Police would not say how much money or what types of weapons were found inside the house, citing an ongoing investigation. No arrests had been made as of last night.
