Home on N. Detroit Ave. razed after suspicious fire

5/17/2008

A fire of suspicious origin yesterday destroyed a vacant house on North Detroit Avenue near Palmwood Avenue in central Toledo, authorities said.

Fire crews arrived at 1405 North Detroit about 12:30 a.m. and found heavy flames at the two-story wood frame structure. Firefighters had the blaze under control about 1:45 a.m.

By that time, the house was a total loss, Battalion Fire Chief Christine Davis said.

City workers razed the house later in the morning, according to the fire department.

The Lucas County Auditor s Web site lists the owner of the house, built in 1950, as St. Mark s Baptist Church. It was valued at $12,900, and had been owned by the church since March, according to the Web site.

The fire s cause was under investigation, the chief said.
