2 Lagrange 4th graders arrested over gun

5/31/2008

Two fourth-grade students at Lagrange Elementary School were arrested yesterday for having a gun in school and threatening other students, police said.

The boys, 9 and 11 years old, were both charged with delinquency in connection with conveyance of a weapon on school premises and aggravated menacing, police said.

They were being held in the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center pending a detention hearing.

A paraprofessional at the school, 1001 North Erie St., saw the 11-year-old boy acting suspiciously about 11:30 a.m. and holding something under his shirt. When she approached him, he lifted his shirt and showed the gun. The worker took it and contacted authorities.

The 9-year-old boy had the gun earlier in the morning, and each had threatened a student with it, police said.

The gun, described as a 32-caliber handgun, was not loaded, police said.

The boys will have an expulsion hearing with the school district.
