A seriously injured man was found propped up against a light pole in central Toledo about a block from his house early Sunday with apparent blunt force trauma to his head, police said.

Sherman Smith, 56, of 742 Greene St., is listed in critical condition at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center Monday morning. Police said they do not expect him to survive.

Prior to being found, the victim was seen in the middle of City Park Avenue and Sterling Street about 3:30 a.m. being assisted by two young men. A passing motorist called 911 and left upon hearing sirens.

The young boys thought the man was drunk, and dragged him from the street to the curb, said Detective Denise Muszynski.

The detective said Smith has severe head trauma but no other injuries on his body, indicating he was likely not hit by a car. It also didn t appear he had been robbed.

Responding units were unable to find the victim until several hours later.

The two young men are not considered suspects but may have information that will help in the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers, 419-255-1111 or 419-245-3142.
