Firefighters extinguish blaze at Toledo foundry

6/21/2008

No one was hurt last night when a fire damaged a central Toledo metal foundry, authorities said.

A neighbor flagged down a passing fire truck after spotting smoke about 9:15 p.m. at the Clinton Foundry, 1202 West Bancroft St. The firefighters called for backup upon arrival, reporting dense smoke inside the building.

The first fire crew found a small fire at the center of the one-story building and extinguished it before the other firefighters arrived. No one was working at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire was unclear and there was no estimate of the damage, Battalion Fire Chief Christine Davis said.

A foundry employee, who asked not to be named, said he and other employees were pouring hot-iron castings earlier in the day. The foundry has been in operation since 1997 and has about a half-dozen employees.
