The man accused of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman in downtown Toledo early Monday before she stabbed him in the arm was arraigned Tuesday, authorities said.

Terrence Simmons, 35, of 1602 Pinewood Ave., was arraigned on charges of rape and kidnapping in Toledo Municipal Court. He was being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of a $200,000 bond, according to court records.

Detective Sherri Wise, of Toledo police, said Simmons followed the victim as she left Frankie s Inner City, 308 Main St. in East Toledo, shortly after midnight. He pulled her into an alley at 319 North Superior and assaulted her, both physically and sexually. Police were called at 12:50 a.m.

Simmons and the victim do not know each other. He offered to safely accompany her home, Detective Wise said.

The rape victim will not be charged for stabbing Simmons because she acted in self-defense, police said.

At Simmons request, a preliminary hearing was set for July 1, according to court records.
