A West Toledo man was being held in the Lucas County jail without bond Wednesday morning after authorities said he tried to kill himself and his 4-year-old daughter by asphyxiation.

Thomas Bragg, 46, of 4129 Willys Pkwy. is charged with attempted murder and felonious assault. His arraignment in Toledo Municipal Court is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday.

Mr. Bragg is accused of driving his sport utility vehicle to a vacant parking lot at Telegraph and West State Line roads about 4 a.m. Wednesday after his wife told him she was leaving him, police said.

There, he attached a hose from the vehicle s exhaust pipe to a rear passenger window and left the vehicle running. Mr. Bragg also placed duct tape over the headlights to conceal the vehicle, police said.

A truck driver noticed the vehicle and called police, who found Mr. Bragg and his daughter, Haylee, lying down in the rear of the vehicle. Both appeared to be asleep or unconscious, a report said.

The young girl was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where she was treated and released, police said. She is in the care of Lucas County Children Services.
