MONROE - A family of five was displaced Saturday evening after a couch fire caused extensive smoke damage to their home, authorities said.

No one was hurt in the fire, which started about 6:30 p.m. at 38 East Noble Ave., which is occupied by the Knodel family, but smoke damage rendered the two-story home uninhabitable, fire Capt. Mike DeSloover said. An 11-year-old boy, who was home alone at the time of the fire, called 911 after spotting smoke in the back of the house. He escaped with his dog.

Captain DeSloover said the blaze started in a couch in the rear of the house, but fire officials were still investigating the cause of the fire.
