A 43-year-old man was in serious condition last night, hours after being beaten and assaulted with pepper spray by two teenagers at a South Toledo gas station, authorities said.

Juan Espinosa Orosco, of Colburn Street, was admitted to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Mr. Orosco was found sitting on the curb of the Stop & Shop gas station, 905 South Ave., just after midnight yesterday. He was bleeding from the mouth and had cuts and scrapes on his body, police said.

An anonymous caller reported to authorities that the two teenage suspects were still on scene. Police arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of delinquency related to felonious assault when they discovered the suspect had taken the victim's Ohio Direction Card used for food stamp benefits.

An 18-year-old suspect was not arrested pending further investigation, police said.
