BOWLING GREEN - Police credited the quick arrest yesterday of a Detroit man suspected of robbing a North Main Street bank to bank employees, witnesses, and law enforcement doing the right thing at the right time.

William D. Brown, Jr., 37, was in custody within 30 minutes of the 911 call police received about 9:30 a.m. regarding a holdup at the Fifth Third Bank branch near the Woodland Mall.

"Fast response time from us, a good 911 call, and very competent bank employees" led to the suspect's capture, Bowling Green police Sgt. Jason Stanley said.

Employees told police the robber entered the bank shortly before 9:30 a.m., told them he had a gun, and demanded money.

Sergeant Stanley said no customers were in the bank at the time, but when the robber learned a third employee was outside refilling the automated teller machine with cash, he took one of the employees outside with him to get her.

Then an employee of a nearby business who was outside smoking a cigarette noticed what was going on and called 911 to report the robbery.

Officers were on their way when a bank employee called 911 to report that the bank had been robbed and the suspect had fled in a car he stole from one of the employees.

Sergeant Stanley said Sgt. Alan Carsey was following the vehicle when the dispatcher relayed the car's description and license plate number.

Sergeant Carsey pursued the vehicle north out of the city and eventually into Middleton Township.

The chase ended about 10 a.m. when the driver crashed while attempting to turn off State Rt. 582 onto Hull Prairie Road just east of Haskins.

"He turned too wide, hit a guardrail, and spun out," Sergeant Stanley said.

Mr. Brown, who was charged with aggravated robbery and kidnapping, was treated at Wood County Hospital then transported to Wood County jail where he was being held pending arraignment today in Bowling Green Municipal Court.

The money that was believed to have been stolen from the bank was recovered in the stolen car, Sergeant Stanley said.

"Between Alan doing a heads-up job and employees doing a heads-up job, it really worked out great for us," Sergeant Stanley said.
