FOSTORIA A fire yesterday in the basement of Seneca Wire and Manufacturing Co. was caused by an employee using a blow torch to cut some metal, authorities said.

Some wood coated with creosote caught fire, they said.

The fire was reported about 12:50 p.m., and the plant was evacuated.

About 20 Fostoria and Tiffin firefighters contained the blaze to the plant's basement, Assistant Fire Chief Brian Anderson said.

No estimate of the damage was made.
