Arson caused an estimated $20,000 damage to an unoccupied house Tuesday on the east side, authorities said.

When fire crews arrived about 7:19 a.m. at a single-family house at 1420 Albert St. they found flames in the house, with no one inside, according to the Toledo fire department. Firefighters attacked the fire and had it under control within several minutes, before it could spread beyond the bedroom. It was ruled arson.

There were no working smoke detectors in the house. The $20,000 damage estimate did not include damage to the contents of the house, largely empty after the occupants moved out about a month ago, according to the report. About a week ago someone kicked in the rear door and took couches outside.

The Lucas County Auditor's Web site lists Robert Martin as the owner of the two-story frame house built in 1925.
