CURTICE, Ohio — A toddler died in an area hospital Sunday after he was pulled from a private pond at a residence off Curtice East West Road, authorities said.

Area divers pulled Caleb Nissen, 4, from a pond about 4:40 p.m. after he went underwater behind a residence in the 21000 block of Curtice East West. He was in the water “for some time,” said Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Bratton.

The alarm was raised by Tina Nissen, who reported that her son had fallen off the edge of a dock into a pond. “One moment he was there. Then he was not,” Sheriff Bratton said.

Emergency medical personnel on the scene applied CPR, and the boy appeared to be in critical condition, the sheriff said.

Before falling, the child was on a concrete dock that extended about 25 feet out into the water. Strong winds were gusting from the southwest at up to 25 knots, sheriff’s deputies said.

The boy was found in about 12 feet of water and about 10-15 feet from the end of the dock.

He was not wearing a flotation device, according to the sheriff’s office.
