Police auction collects $132,520 for city coffers
5/1/2011A 2002 Cadillac Escalade brought in the highest bid — $8,000 — Saturday at the Toledo Police Department’s first auction this year of abandoned and forfeited vehicles.
The auction’s 99 vehicles, including the forfeited sport utility vehicle, two generators, and a snow blower, sold for a total of $132,520.
There were 387 registered bidders at the police department’s North Toledo impound lot at 198 Dura Ave., Officer Kathy Trautman said.
Net proceeds from the abandoned vehicles, $84,270, will go to the city’s general fund.
The remaining proceeds, $48,250 from forfeited vehicles, will go into the law-enforcement trust fund.
Among forfeited vehicles, the oldest car bid on was a 1964 Chevrolet Impala, which sold for $4,200, police said.
For abandoned vehicles, the highest bid overall was $3,700 for a 1996 GMC dump truck. The lowest sale among cars and trucks was $400 for a 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity.
Most buyers typically only purchase one vehicle at the auctions, but Saturday one buyer bought at least six vehicles.
The police typically hold at least four vehicle auctions a year.
A date for the next auction — which is scheduled for mid to late June — has not been set.
