A Monroe man was killed Monday afternoon when the minivan he was a passenger in hydroplaned on the wet pavement from the heavy rains.

Michael Franklin, 64, of 6231 N. Monroe St., was transferred to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center after the 4:15 p.m. accident, but did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, Toledo Police reported.

According to the report, Kirt Quatro, 47, of Newport, Mich., was driving a Ford Econoline van in the left lane of I-75N south of the I-280 exit, when he hydroplaned, lost control, crossed over the right lane, and struck the guard rail. The van flipped on the passenger side, and Mr. Franklin was partially ejected from the vehicle, which landed on him, the report states.

Both were transported to the hospital. A spokesman at St. Vincent said there was no one with the name of Kirt Quatro listed at the hospital.
