MONTPELIER, Ohio — A 75-year-old Montpelier man suffered life threatening injuries Monday after he apparently fell asleep and drove off State Route 107 in Williams County’s Superior Township, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

James Turney was flown to University of Toledo Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition, a hospital spokesman said.

Troopers said Mr. Turney was westbound on Route 107 about 10:15 a.m. in a Mercury Mariner when he drove off the right side of the road and struck a concrete field marker and utility pole, causing the SUV to flip over on its side.

The accident remains under investigation. Mr. Turney was wearing a seat belt.

Superior Township is about 65 miles west of Toledo.
