Marblehead man killed in 4-vehicle collision

A Marblehead man was killed in a four-vehicle crash Saturday night on state Rt. 53 south of Port Clinton.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported the chain-reaction crash just after 10:30 p.m. started when Richard England, 63, attempted to pass another vehicle and was hit by an oncoming sport utility vehicle. Mr. England, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from his sport utility vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. England’s passenger, 7-year-old Jason A. England of Oak Harbor, was wearing a seat belt and suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening. He was taken by ambulance to Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton.

The two occupants of the oncoming SUV, Doris M. Celian, 52, of Maumee and Sujata Hegde, 51, of Toledo, were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts.

The vehicle Mr. England tried to pass was struck by the oncoming SUV after the initial crash. Its driver, Meredith Fritz, 26, of Northwood, suffered injuries that the patrol said were not life-threatening. She was taken to Magruder Hospital for treatment.

The fourth vehicle involved in the crash was rear-ended by Mr. England’s SUV following the initial collision.

Neither the driver nor the passenger in that vehicle was injured.
