SANDUSKY — A Coast Guard crew Saturday afternoon rescued a sailor sitting on his capsized sailboat in Sandusky Bay.

The sailor, whose name was not released, was taken by Sandusky paramedics to Firelands Regional Medical Center because he showed signs of hypothermia. The water temperature was 49.8 degrees, said PO Jonathan Lasalle of the Coast Guard’s Marblehead station.

Coast Guard crews launched a 33-foot vessel when Marblehead station heard from Sandusky police at 4:08 p.m. that someone was clinging to an overturned sailboat in the bay.

The vessel arrived at the scene, a half-mile west of Cedar Point, about 19 minutes later to find the sailor on his boat. He wore a life jacket.

He was in the water right after his sailboat capsized, Petty Officer Lasalle said.

A commercial company salvaged the sailboat and towed it to a nearby dock, the Coast Guard said.

Sandusky is 55 miles east of Toledo.
